white denim - Fits
A continuation from their Workout holiday album of last year, Fits finds White Denim expanding on their raucous garage sound with a touch of progged-up psychedelia. In contravention with 2009's lo-fi preoccupations, White Denim steer clear of that ubiquitous In The Red sound instead favouring a more fleshed out, soulful feel. 'Say What You Want' is like a classic MC5 song, laying down heavy pentatonic riffs inherited from Hendrix's Band Of Gypsys before venturing off into unexpectedly intricate instrumental noodling. The further you get into this album the more it becomes apparent that White Denim are on their way to becoming a really great rock & roll band, combining the visceral energy of proto punk with the musical dexterity of prog (not ordinarily the easiest of bedfellows), making all the right references along the way. The album's recording is perfectly judged too, not even attempting to veil its designs on sounding like it was made in the late '60s or early '70s. Far from sounding lo-fi however, the album just sounds incredibly full-bodied and warm, riddled with vintage effects and timeless analogue production techniques. Ace.
