peter broderick - Roscoe / Games Again
*LIMITED TO JUST 300 COPIES FOR THE WORLD* Having been born as recently as 1987, Peter Broderick really isn't old enough to be as good as he is. As if his (multi-)instrumental skills weren't enough (he's played alongside M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel and Efterklang in his time), this man's prodigious talent has extended into the field of songwriting, having already officially nailed pastoral contemporary composition on Float, Broderick's immensely beautiful piano-and-strings driven LP for Type. Now we've had some time to soak up his widely celebrated Home LP - a record that's becoming something of a crossover hit, garnering praise from the mainstream as much as from the usual outposts of alternative music - Broderick releases this insufferably limited 7", featuring an alternative version of album track 'Games Again' and a wonderful rendition of 'Roscoe' by his Bella Union labelmates, Midlake. It's a great cover for Broderick to choose, and his harmonies reinforce the melody wonderfully, whilst his deft instrumental abilities reconfigure the original with a stirring, folksy elegance. Flipping over, 'Games Again' exhibits a tranquil and stately loveliness - it's such a delicate and lulling piece of music, structured around layered, wordless vocals strung together by sparsely laid out piano chords. This music stalks the same emotional plains as Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, and that's a high compliment indeed. Highly limited and destined to be hugely sought after, get one while you can...
