sunken foal - Fallen Arches
Sunken Foal is a project fronted by Dublin producer Duncan Murphy, who surrounds himself with a supporting cast of collaborators and additional musicians, all helping to forge a compelling hour's worth of guitar-driven electronics. Although the press blurb would bill Murphy as an Irish Fennesz, such claims are largely without foundation and these pieces have more in common than conventional song structure than anything the Austrian guitar/laptop maven has ever released. Opener 'Dutch Elm' is a decent enough showing, bringing together hushed vocals, acoustic guitar and piano for a sedate five minute meander. 'Cash Poor' continues in this sort of vein, bringing to mind Colleen in its elegant confluence of shambling instrumentation. Of course this wouldn't be Planet Mu without a few choppy beat details circulating, and sure enough 'A Bear In The Hermitage' (that would have livened up Russian Ark no end) and 'Rikkic' both fit that bill, serving up bristling electronic rhythm sections, but it's the compositions that follow the same sort of blueprint as 'Can't F*ck The Moonlight' (blissfully unrelated to the similarly titled Leann Rimes top 40 troubler) whose poly-instrumental strangeness proves the biggest draw.
