mr. maxted - Lives & Privacy (94-89)
Back in stock. Once again proving why they're one of our favourite labels ever, the indefinably great Mordant Music have unearthed a collection of nine tracks from the archive of "Roehampton's feral analog spectre Mr Maxted". Pressed up on utilitarian Grey vinyl and accompanied by a corrugated stiffener in clear plastic sleeve, the sounds are equally austere and decidedly LoFi, with the results largely recorded to tape which should emit shivers of pleasure down the spines of those who know and love the ferrous qualities of a good tape recording. When it was produced, between 89-94, the sounds would have skirted the edges of the the predominant rave and house styles of the time, instead bearing heavy influences from Cabaret Voltaire, early Portion Reform and Severed heads, and probably would have squirmed more comfortbly next to the nastier Belgian new beat tracks eminating from mainland Europe and Scandinavia, but are shot through with a British sense of darkstyle humour more akin to the man Aphex, whose 85-92 set would warrant more comparisons. If you liked V/VM's Benelux project or anything else from Mordant Music this is an absolute must. Awesome.
