wooden wand & the vanishing voice - The Flood
A throwback to 2005, this Wooden Wand LP revisits a time when he still towed The Vanishing Voice around with him. While in recent times James Toth has got a little more grown up and focussed in his songwriting, The Flood recontextualises his music within a more psychedelic landscape, with longer, improvisation-based pieces housing his acoustic compositions. In a sense this was a bit of a golden age for Toth's music, and on release like this and Gipsy Freedom his hippyish eccentricities are balanced out by the drones and freeform scrawl of his fellow bandmates. Far from being mere noodlers, The Vanishing Voice bring a great deal to the table, much as you'd expect from a band featuring such accomplished scene regulars as Hush Arbors' Keith Wood and Magik Markers' Pete Nolan. In fact, the band fill in a lot of the blanks left by Toth's actually rather functional (to put it mildly) guitar playing, undoubtedly adding something to his songs, and as good as his more recent solo releases have been, there's definitely a place for this wilder, more eccentric branch of Wooden Wand's output in your collection.
