While the music might not sound identical to Lee's newer records under the Anduin moniker, there's definitely an air of doomy ambience surrounding the chunky riffs and thumping beats giving the band an air of real originality. It's hard to find many metal bands these days who do anything more than simply crib from their more successful predecessors, so it's nice … Read more

You can always rely on Richmond-based Jonathan Lee (aka Anduin) for grimy, dark ambient escapism. This latest mini-album continues his rich, coal-black seam following the excellent ‘Abandoned In Sleep’ LP and takes his sound into deeper, weirder places than ever before. Based on performances and an installation in a gallery in 2010, the music here is harrowingly low-key; wavering synthesizer drones are placed over heaving field recordings giving the record a somewhat frightening eerie quality. At times you can almost hear things in the room with you as you listen; a knife, a chain, footsteps or some… Read more

*THE LATEST IN A LONG LINE OF INCREDIBLE DARK AMBIENT ALBUMS RELEASED THIS YEAR - HARROWING TEXTURES AND GHOSTLY LOCATION RECORDINGS PLAYING TRICKS WITH YOUR PERCEPTION AND SLOWLY PULLING YOU INTO AN INCREDIBLY IMMERSIVE WORLD OF LAYERED SOUNDS* For his second album Jonathan Lee draws on two years of recording and performance - and it's not just his own material that's used for the record either. 'Abandoned In Sleep' features studio recordings, sample edits and collaborative work with artists including Xela, Jasper TX, Svarte Greiner, Stephen Vitiello and Gareth Davis among others. The Richmond, Virginia based SMTG Limited label pluck out a real treat for all fans of low-lit drone electronics with the debut full length release from Khate. Hailing from the same district as the label itself, Khate has attracted attention for her live performances, where she combines circuit bent toys, synths, drum machines and other sound making equipment to brew an ominous brand of ambience, at times reminding us of Mika Vainio or the ghostly vistas of Deathprod. To start the darkness 'Additives' feeds classic sci-fi atmospherics inherited from Delia Derbyshire through analog oscillator ton… Read more

A classic case of a collaboration adding up to more than the sum of its parts, this incredible album arrived here with a fair amount of expectation but duly proceeded to completely blow us away with its utterly immersive blend of shimmering drones and densely crafted, submerged melodies. The SMTG label has already impressed us a great deal with a pristine lineup of releases from all manner of artists we love, but "The Bending of Light" must surely rank as the best thing on the label yet. Many of you will no doubt already be familiar with the work of both Jasper TX and Anduin… Read more

Until now best known as a member of experimental band Souvenir's Young America, Jonathan Lee of Richmond, Virginia makes his solo debut as Anduin with some considerable style. The tone of 'Forever Waiting' at least partly subscribes to certain aesthetic conditions that could be classified under the dark-ambient banner, but there's nothing here that wallows in the cloudy, post-metal atmospherics you might tend to associate with that increasingly popular sub-genre. Instead, Anduin's music permits a little light into all that shade, and while 'Rain Cloud, Storm Cloud' and 'Reason In Exile' pr… Read more

Man Bird Dress is a thing of glorious darkness and immense beauty, instilling an atmosphere of sustained horror more by suggestion than by beating you over the head with a stick marked 'menacing drone'. There are three long pieces collected on this release, two recorded in a studio environment, one taken from a live performance: 'Man' kicks off the A-side with a blend of midnight clanking and almost mesmerising drone, as if a handful of lumbering percussive noises bump into a sinister mess of string tones - momentarily sounding like Stephen O'Malley collaborating with Evelyn Glennie… Read more

This incredibly engrossing set from John Twells is soaked in a sumptuous, almost devotional ambience. Housed in a sublime silkscreened package with artwork designed by Svarte Greiner's Erik Skodvin, the album makes gestures towards the more Aleister Crowley-ish end of the religious compass. The A-side immediately settles into a choral mode, looping voices in harmony, building up a dense wall of ecclesiastical sound that resonates with a reverberant glow. In equal parts the vocals suggest the Hilliard Ensemble and Richard Youngs - quite a combination - and given Twells' recent output, at an… Read more

Previously found releasing music via labels like Sub Rosa and 12k, sound artist Stephen Vitiello now arrives at the SMTG label, with a DVD featuring six cross-platform collaborations with visual artists (Seoungho Cho, Matt Flowers, Eder Santos, Kevin Gallagher, Andrew Deutsch and Nic DeSantis). Preveiously, Vitiello has collaborated with everyone from Pauline Olivers to Machinefabriek, and has presented installation work at such prestigious venues as New York's The Whitney museum and Paris' Cartier Foundation. On this DVD we get to hear Vitiello's soundtrack works while watch… Read more

One of electronic music's most enigmatic artists, Ekkehard Ehlers teams up with percussionist Paul Wirkus for a selection of freeform avant-garde compositions that cross-pollinate the building blocks of jazz (you'll hear double bass from Werner Dafeldecker and clarinet from Kai Fagaaschinski) with extreme and often highly adventurous electronic treatments. 'Okno' fizzes with shambolic guitar modulations and creaking amplified textures, 'Wiem' supplies warm floating tremolo tones in a far more sedate, even blissful mode, while a piece like 'Ziemia' is all about intricately spun dis… Read more

Limited copies back in stock! This unexpected treat from SMTG captures a hushed, intensely beautiful collaboration between tour partners Erik Skodvin (Svarte Greiner/Deaf Center) and Jonathan Lee (Anduin). Part 1 on the A-side engulfs you with textured ambience and crushed drones like a dreamlike sea mist, full of filtered melodies and swelling string-based discord that penetrates foggier background textures with the slowly fraying glare of feedback. It sounds like Deathprod and Angelo Badalamenti performing up high on some mountain summit, the air pressure playing tricks on the sou… Read more

**Purple Marbled Vinyl (Includes the full album on both CD & LP formats)** Until now best known as a member of experimental band Souvenir's Young America, Jonathan Lee of Richmond, Virginia makes his solo debut as Anduin with some considerable style. The tone of 'Forever Waiting' at least partly subscribes to certain aesthetic conditions that could be classified under the dark-ambient banner, but there's nothing here that wallows in the cloudy, post-metal atmospherics you might tend to associate with that increasingly popular sub-genre. Instead, Anduin's music permits a little light into al… Read more
