Already on his ninth album, by rights The Gasman should be well and truly running out of ideas by now, but Chris Reeves (for that is his real name) shows no signs of taking it easy. 'Ruter' instantly situates you in that familiar Planet Mu mindset, scambling erratic beats with lightly detuned, Aphex-influenced synths. Once that's despatched it's onto 'Helpline' a frosty configuration of discordant choral-sounding synth pads, acidic basslines and shattered drum sequences buried relatively deeply in the mix. Gasman's disturbed opus "Remedial" comes to us from Portsmouth's Christopher Reeves, jacking out an oddly compulsive mixture of hardcore revivalist f**kups and haunted ballroom ambient stretches. The juxtaposition is set from the off - 'Horses On Ice' supplying the eerie materials in a layered fashion while 'Ajax' keys in the right piano sequences and breakbeat tumbles for a nice mashup that sounds like the Ragga Twins on consciousness depriving Ketamin, melodies supplied by RDJ in finest regressive stylee. As the price of natural gas rockets and the world seems poised on the brink of carbon-fuelled oblivion, there's not a lot of love these days for your trusty gasman. Possibly taking this as inspiration (although we seriously doubt it...), 'Love Collection' is the latest album from Portsmouth based Christopher Reeves (aka The Gasman), wherein he follows up the 'This One's For You' with some more of the shattered digital plates that made his name originally over on Sublight. Unless you have an aversion to hardboiled, glitch-fed electronica of course. In that case; do one! Making the permanent move from Sublight over to the Planet Mu roster, Reeves hasn't changed his sound one iota - but given the relative success of his deformed IDM 'ardcore, you wouldn't want it any other way. "Portsmouth resident Christopher Reeves was born in 1976 and grew up mainly listening to Cliff and Elvis until he got a radio of his own, when he got into taping synth-pop music off the airwaves and prolonging the good bits using the tape-to-tape function on his cassette recorder. Then he started playing chords over the top to make it more exciting and satisfying, almost turning them into his own bits of music. Christopher Reeves (aka The Gasman) has been tending his digital boilers for some years, releasing work through Planet Mu and now Sublight. With a sound that is textbook hard-boiled electronica, Reeves delights in pock-marking IDM rendered backdrops with polished bursts of cascading beats, analogue melodies and needling breakbeats; the result being a sound you've heard a million times before, but is still capable of delighting. Massive double-cd set from Portsmouth's Chris Reeves for Planet Mu, once again pairing his love of Aphex-style playful intricacies with a harrowing line in abandoned dancehall instrumentals. The opening of this album defies expectations with its dense splice-up of choral phrases and ghostly ice-rink vibes, seemingly influenced by VVM's Caretaker and Akira Rabelais' haunting choir re-arrangements.
