Elliott Egerton aka Bang On! Makes the maligned scouse tongue his own on [sic]. An old rap head, he’s been on the scene for much longer than his twenty one years might suggest, appearing on 1Xtra when he was a mere twelve years old. Stylistically he flies between elastic grime (‘ands igh’, ‘Hustlin’), experimental weirdness (‘Your Gay’, ‘No Lifts, No Ladders’) and leaves enou… Read more

"St. Louis, Missouri is the genesis for Coultrain, Black Spade and the group Hawthorne Headhunters. ‘Train was introduced to music via the church and by his teens was immersed in poetry. Spade had a record-enthusiast for a father who took the youth record shopping with him around town often. By the time the two were teenagers, they were well on their musical path, experimenting and refining their sounds. They met in 1999 and instantly formed a connection. In search of something new, Black Spade migrated out west to soak up the vibrant Southern California vibes and promptly me… Read more

Homeboy Sandman follows up the 'Subject Matter' EP with his 2nd Stones Throw release, 'Chimera'. Production is handled by Paul White, Mr. Familiar, Exile, J57, Navie D, lyrics are conscious. Instrumentals of Navie D's epic 'Hold Your Head' and Paul White's cosmic beats to 'Look Out' and 'They Can't Hang (Word To The Mother)' would be well appreciated round these parts!

Fresh from collaborating with Sufjan Stevens, stalwart Anticon MC Serengeti morphs into his O'Doul's (non-alcoholic beer) drinking alter-ego Kenny Dennis. The production is pure mid-late '90s backpack beats from Jel and Odd Nosdam while the raps make reference to lots of American things that we don't really get, to be honest. It's an in-joke taken spread over six tracks that longtime Anticon heads might, or might get.

Stones Throw's most ambitious Hip Hop project since the Jaylib album is finally unveiled. Featuring some 35 MCs - from veterans such as Dead Prez, Jonwayne, Aloeblacc, Guilty Simpson, Prince Po, Krondon, M.E.D., alongside newcomers like Coin Locker Kid - and beats from three production units - Australian mainman Katalyst, Fuzzface aka Portishead's Geoff Barrow, and the three-piece 7-Stu-7 - it's a return to the crate-dug values of golden era boom bap stemming from the producer's disillusionment with the current state of Hip Hop. In the style of Madlib's best mixtapes, it plays through as a seamle… Read more

**Beautifully repackaged on triple LP with "Bone Marrow" bonus 7", also includes a digital download card redeemable from the label** Lootpack's lyrical skills were first unveiled on Tha Alkaholiks' debut LP '21 And Over', and 'WLIX' from the Liks' second LP. The positive feedback from these collaborations led to Lootpack's own EP 'Ill Psych Move' on Crate Digger's Palace Records in 1996, a venture funded by Madlib's father, soul-crooner Otis Jackson Snr. It was through this poorly distributed 12" that the group caught the attention of Stones Throw Records' founder Peanut Butter Wo… Read more

With the weight of expectation thrust upon her, Mercury prize winner Speech Debelle deals a confident sophomore album in 'Freedom Of Speech'. Blessed by guest spots from Roots Manuva and Realism and set to reserved, mature instrumentals by in-demand beat-maker Kwes (DELS, Warp Records, DRC project), Speech confronts the world in her deceptively gentle voice, spitting themes of revolution and love. It all really comes together on the pensive, moody soul of her state-of-affairs tune 'Blaze Up A Fire', Kwes on point with a brooding beat and Speech trading bars with Roots Manuva in o… Read more
