HCB strike up with their notorious Prodigy medley backed by an original Afrobeat ace. Seamlessly segueing 'Out of Space', 'Walls Of Jericho' and 'No Good (Start The Dance)' it's guaranteed to put a grin on even the most curmudgeonly gurned-out mug and we expect you'll likely hear it parping up all o'er the shop this summer. The flipside 'Owl Sanctuary' is another ripe peach, penned by drummer Olly Blackman and suitably strong on dipping, swerving drum syncopation. Fun times."Shrine Records, founded by Berry Gordy’s ex-wife Raynoma and his ex-employee Eddie Singleton, was the District of Columbia’s own attempt to stare down the mighty Motown. But after the destruction of the label during the riots following Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination, D.C. soul music never fully recovered. Raynoma and Eddie Singleton’s go-to outside engineer Robert Jose Williams wouldn’t be the only entrepreneur who picked up the torch, but it’s hard to argue that anyone produced better soul music inside the Beltway during the 1970s. While not manning… Read more

Beardy Italo power pomp from the one referred to as Steve Moore. Taking some sexy time out from myriad other projects, he returns to the Lovelock handle he coined for an edit 12" on Mindless Boogie to fully indulge a passion for beach-toned Disco cruisers and sleeve-rolling Pop gazes. The titular opener imagines a blueprint set out by Michael Mann and Phil Collins on a dusky summer evening by the bayside in '85, while 'The Fog' takes a solitary stroll on a white sandy beach, catching breezy synth tones in his highlights before the leggy keytar and fretless bass seduction of 'Don't Turn Away (From My Love)', baybeh. Fade to mon… Read more

**Bonkers but highly endearing hippie psyche-funk jams from the notorious commune leader and self-described "deity" who preferred to be known as YaHoWha. Double LP housed in heavyweight tip-on style gatefold jacket** "During his time on our planet, Father Yod understood that beauty and joy, the things of Heaven, were meant to inform and inspire our time here on Earth. His family of thirteen wives and over a hundred other beloved members were part of the Renaissance of the 1960s and 70s among the young people of Los Angeles and elsewhere, and the music that Father ma… Read more

Choice neo-Italo fromage from Harvey's International Feel. Boys From Patagonia are two cousins - Davide Armour (Italy) and Philippe Mascerano (Patagonia) - who grew up with a love of vintage synths - namely Philippe's dad's Yamaha CS-80 - and the tacky culture of San Remo and Italian/Balearic music. 'Rimini 80' is a beast: mid-tempo bass arpeggios enhance your strut into the near-retro-future and brassy synth parps trigger whatever cocktail of pharmaceuticals you may, or may not, have consumed. On a naughtier tip, 'Its So Exciting' features an orgasmic young lady al… Read more

Denmark's slickest disco duo back in action with slo-mo and blue grooves. On 'Cosyland' the vocals are pushed up close and intimate on a swaying waltz, whereas 'Get Laid Back' harnesses portside guitar strokes and breezy synths on a grinding bass arpeggio. Reminding of their provenance, 'Cocaine Cool (extended Vol2)' revamps their greatest hit, and '101 Part Two' slips back into dreamy disco molasses mode.
Primetime electronic Disco swerve. Mullet Records' Justin Winks makes power moves under the aegis of Casio Social Club with the fruity 'Nordic Mights', beside a dubby Belgo-Afro-Cosmic deceleration from Djuma Soundsystem and Kolombo.

Debonaire debut album of '80s disco-infused House from pivotal Running Back, Arto Mwambe and Tuff City Kids' dude, Phillip Lauer. Slipping comfortably alongside the label's long-player from Tiger & Woods, and comparable with Massimilano Pagliara's 'Focus For Infinity' on the closely-affiliated Live At Robert Johnson label, Lauer's 'Phillips' cycles through twelve crisply functional dancefloor workouts paced with a mature flow and borne from a sincere taste for the romance of mid-'80s wave music, Italo/Electro and early Chicago styles. If we're pushed to pick a few favourites we'd have to say the f… Read more

Four tracks of fruitier Electro-Disco-Tech from' a Leeeds-based duo. After a year apparently spent rubbing shoulders with the likes of Wolf & Lamb and Soul Clap they present their debut solo vinyl. A-side offers chuggy, druggy funk with a cyber-balearic breeze on 'Change In The Tide', and sleazier Boogie-House for the hi-5ing V-neck crew on 'Far From Home'. Turn it over and 'Look To Higher Ground' plays it deeper with meaningful chords and gloopy synth washes, leaving 'Visions' glide out on a piano-pushed MacBook disco pulse.

Best known for their homebrewed KM Editions, Keyboard Masher step up to Resista with two highly effective edits. Face up 'Juju' tucks into a frothy scene of Afro-beat drums, wild synth moves and squirrely guitar chops with a dizzying psychedelic breakdown and 2nd half shakk-out. Deeper into the jungle, 'Tcham Tcham' locks onto a hypnotic disco vibe powered by a thick 4/4 bass layered with swingeing, uptempo percussions and cosmic synths.

"A decade in the making, Soul Cal is the definitive survey of America's best independent 70's soul-ensembles. Profiled within this album and book are the bands that transitioned from funk to disco; the bands that kept up the backbeat as rhythm moved to the back- seat. Collected here for the first time are the musical dreams of dozens, dreams that were deferred but were never discarded. From the positively-funky sound of Luther Davis' "You Can Be a Star" to the airtight hi hats and space-bass that guides Pure Essence's "Wake Up," Soul Cal offers the enthused a chance to listen, read and reflect on this great burst of black American creativity."

**CD issue of André Cymone's 1983 sophomore album. Remastered from original tapes and includes six bonus 12" single versions and instrumentals** Before he went on to become a producer and songwriter for the likes of Jody Watley, Pebbles, Adam Ant, Jermaine Stewart and Lalah Hathaway, and after he'd split from family friend and musical accomplice Prince's touring band, André Cymone wrote this super-fusion side in 1983. '80s synth-funk meets futurist R&B and New Wave with a proper Pop lean. Ultra-FLY!
First ever remastered CD issue of André Cymone's seminal debut album of '82 Wave Funk! Originally released on Columbia in 1982, 'Livin' In The New Wave' was Cymone's first solo record after departing Prince's touring band over a spat on the 1981 European tour. It manifests his dream fusion of R&B, Pop, Synth Wave and Boogie Funk in determined style, resulting in a seminal album which more than carries its own weight under the shadow of his former bandmate and family friend. **Includes bonus single versions of 'Livin' In The New Wave' and 'Kelly's Eyes'**

A peachy pick from Tom Noble's 'In Liger Vision' EP, remixed by himself, and Scots Disco supremo, Al Kent. Noted compiler and editor, Kent comes correct with a slick and juicy rerub built with all the fruity chops, breakdowns and solos you could hope for, while Noble's own mix is more reserved, tucked-in for those with summat to sho'.
