steve roden / rutger zuydervelt / sabine burger - Lichtung
Lichtung is a half-hour piece featuring excerpts from an audio-visual installation currently being exhibited at the Galerie Vayhinger that sets filmed imagery of water surfaces (directed by Sabine Burger) to delicate and intricately detailed soundtracks by the prolific Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) and the all too often overlooked Steve Roden. Visually, Lichtung is bewitching, taking a number of lengthy shots of water featuring various phenomena, including slow-motion rainfall rupturing the stillness of a pond, ripples moving through algae-covered pools and the undulating image of a stark, wintry treeline as reflected by a mirror-like surface. The music takes on a sympathetically organic tone; it's often quiet, but it's also breathatking beautiful, combining small, amplified textures with processed location-recorded content and digitally treated tones. Towards the end a simple chiming motif emerges from the lowercase babble of textures, ushering in a percussion-driven coda that brings the disc to a haunting conclusion. There are some bells in there, but possibly Tibetan singing bowls too, and using the tiniest range of pitches Roden and Zuydervelt fashion a memorably melodic composition. This brilliant release comes packaged in a handstamped Arigato Pak complete with an interview booklet and a dried leaf(!). Limited to just 150 copies.
