six organs of admittance - Compathia
Now this is the real deal - my favourite of all of Ben Chasny's many releases, 'Compathia' is the record where I think his sound slotted together absolutely perfectly. That's not to say he made any real missteps on his other albums - not at all, but 'Compathia' is the one I find myself going back to time and time again. Maybe it's because at its heart the album is a pop record - it kicks off with 'Close to the Sky' which is as close to 60s psych-pop as Chasny has ever got (without the help of Comets on Fire of course) and then the album proceeds to carry on in this vein for as long as possible - vocals, jaunty percussion and of course, acoustic guitar. But this isn't just ragas and gorgeous haunting drones, we can turn it up, stamp our feet and down as many bottles of whiskey as we can afford - these are drinking songs for the avant garde, party hits for the leftfield aficionados, and that's what makes it so great. It takes guts to make an album like this, and it never loses momentum, keeping you guessing until the last moment on finale 'Only the Sun Knows', an 11 minute psychedelic masterpiece which would have Acid Mothers Temple fans clawing at their tight jeans in amazement. Really this is just about as good as it gets, and if you haven't managed to grab a copy yet then do so without delay - as with all the other reissues this week this is a limited run.
