peter broderick - Docile
Peter Broderick is a name you will be hearing a lot more of in the months and years to come. After a string of solo shows and a couple of extremely limited releases Broderick has already been the subject of a kind of quietly frenzied bidding war from labels desperate to sign him up - and a quick listen to any of his available material makes it immediately clear why. After spending 2007 as a bit of a collaborator and sideshow figure (joining Efterklang's touring band and providing instrumental sources for Machinefabriek recordings), 2008 is limbering up to be a big year for the Portland native. This 10" of solo piano performances comes sandwiched between two releases for Type: last year's exquisite Retreat/Release single and the forthcoming 'Float' LP, and explores his fascination with solo piano music. It makes for an exceptionally rewarding listen too, weaving through simple, effortlessly emotive phrases Broderick establishes a sense of naivety and freshness with his instrument. Notably, there's a live feel to these recordings (all works were recorded within a single hour-long session) meaning there's a discernible sense of flow and movement. The opening, tentative chords of 'Begin' set the gentle, somnolent mood for the set, only for 'Moment' to embellish that tone with a first few snatches of overt melody. Almost as soon as something solid arises, 'Null' withdraws into vaporousness, but as the centrepiece of the first side, 'Diverge' kicks in and we hear Broderick at his lyrical best, fashioning something truly memorable and evocative. The deep, wintry melancholy that hangs over the piece showcases a formidable compositional talent, something that transcends any notion of this being a performer merely tinkering around. What might otherwise be regarded as a set of creative limitations becomes an asset in Broderick's hands: his blanket use of the sustain pedal becomes a part of his compositional language, lending atmospheric weight to the lapping, undulating arpeggios of 'Return', and the Nyman-esque 'Query. On this release Broderick seems able to craft the most graceful, plaintive music as if plucked from the air... ESSENTIAL PURCHASE!
