bird by snow - Sky
Given that artist name and the sleeve photo, Bird By Snow would probably be best filed alongside the likes of Devendra Banhart or Viking Moses, forging a bit of a freak folk character for himself and generally having a gay old time with a dressing up box and a king-sized helping of kookiness. Once you actually delve into the record itself, you'll encounter Mt. Eerie-style avant-garde songwriting like 'White Sky' and a Hush Arbors-like grasp on advanced fourtrack recording techniques. Further in, 'Green I's' sounds like a premium slice of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy balladeering, and when Bird By Snow knuckles down, there's a real sense of craftsmanship to the album, even experimenting with a bit of lo-fi electroacoustic sculpting on a couple of untitled tracks. There's some strong, accessible songwriting tucked away amongst the weirder home recorded experiments populating this album and while that tatty old freak folk cap fits Bird By Snow's music perfectly well, there's a lot more to this music than the out-of-date trend hopping that would suggest.
