klimek - Dedications (Part 2)
At last available in the digital realm, this music was originally available as a bonus disc that came with initial copies of Klimek's magnificent Dedications album. Sebastian Meissner has been a prominent figure in the field of ambient music for years now, adding to the catalogues of Kompakt and Mille Plateaux, surely two of electronic music's most esteemed imprints. Although the four pieces here were intended as supplementary to Dedications, don't think of them as outtakes or offcuts: this release stands alone as a small, perfectly formed foray into sound processing and the sculpting of atmosphere. Meissner seldom sounds better than when he's reshaping piano into some granular, digital nebula, as if evaporating the instrument on 'For Martin Duffy & Charles Mingus' and 'For Lia & Jim Corrigan', leaving vaporous melodies behind, and in the case of the latter piece, dissolving the piece into a recording of some unidentified location. The guitar plays a part in Klimek's Husker Du tribute 'For Grant Hart & Bob Mould', though it's all a far cry from the classic hardcore sounds of the Minneapolis punk band. Instead, Meissner plucks his way through clean, stuttering phrases that sound far more sanitary and considered than their title might imply. Meissner also dabbles with Eastern instrumentation, as featured on 'For Said Murad & Mazen Kerb', an electronically enhanced exploration of what sounds like the timbres of an oud, all respectfully mangled through a network of plugins and bitcrushing effects. Even if you don't have the main album itself, Dedications Part 2 still makes for a great entry point into Sebastian Meissner sound world, and certainly, any Klimek fans who missed out on this first time will already know how necessary a purchase this is. Wonderful music.
