Passage Through Wilderness Vol 2
miller carr & the shalants - Passage Through Wilderness Vol 2
Within the first few moments of 'Monk And The Middle Child', you'll find yourself comparing Miller Carr to Tom Waits, conjuring a kind of spooky, fairground bossa nova, the like of which most songwriters wouldn't even dream of. Next up, 'Katsu' is a slightly gothic surf rock number, like The Ventures or Dick Dale rewriting The Munsters theme tune. Carr is clearly a distinctive voice among contemporary singer/songwriters, however many influences you find yourself noting - speaking of which, Jonathan Fire*Eater would probably be a decent point of reference too. The difficulty of pinning Carr's music down probably has much to do with the contribution of backing band The Shalants, who approach Carr's songs from an askew angle, helping to carve out a distinctive voice, and sense of atmosphere. There's much to recommend this album, and Carr certainly sounds like a writer worth keeping an eye on.
