ben frost - steel wound
Since it was first released in 2003, and really came to wider attention with a 2007 reissue, Frost has assured a space in the pantheon of guitar-wrangling electro-acoustic sorcerers next to the likes of Fennesz or Loren Connors with his follow-ups, the remarkable 'Theory Of Machines' and 'By The Throat'. But 'Steel Wound' is markedly different, more restrained, melancholic and lonely, vividly capturing the desolate, wind-swept atmosphere of his recording location in a derelict hut at the edge of the ocean in southern Australia. Each piece of the album is an epic journey in itself, amounting to a grand narrative coloured with a cinematic sense of lighting and suggested dialogue thanks to deft incorporation of field recordings made by Lawrence English and vocals from Sarah-Jane Wentzki, woven around his heart-wrenching guitar movements. They're splintered fragments of time, rendered in timely distortion, like forgotten memories beautifully rediscovered in a moment of introspection..
