The first of two collaborative projects from Australian electro-acoustic sound artist Philip Smartzis in the Room40 limited edition EP series, this sees him team up with Japanese minimal composer Kozo Inada to create a haunting 20 minute piece of modern musique concrete which unites pure electronics with field recordings to devastating effect. Deep sub-aquatic drones and high pitched synthesized wails are expertly layered over creaks and rumbles from some unseen dungeon in (I hope) darkest Japan to create a soundscape worthy of David Lynch's most mysterious moments. I hadn't heard of either artist before hearing this piece but this is one of my favourite discs so far in the EP series and perfectly sums up what I enjoy about electro-acoustic composition. Dip your toes into the murky depths, I promise you it will be an experience worth savouring...
