the tower recordings - Folkscene
Originally released way back in 2001 on limited edition vinyl (aren't they all?) 'Folkscene' has finally been expanded and given a proper re-issue by the lovely folks over at The Communion Label and it sounds better than ever. This time around Matt Valentine (of MV+EE) bring some pretty special friends along for the free-folky ride - P.G. Six, Helen Rush, Erika Elder, Tim Barnes, S. Freyer Esq., Steve Gubler, Robert Henry Jones III, Samara Lubelski, Dean Roberts, Andre Vida and Barry Weisblat... phew, is that enough collaborators for you? Well what could have turned into a mess of jingles, jangles and folky nothingness is actually a surprisingly conclusive documentation of a genre. This is one of those records that was totally crucial to the development of the whole psychedelic folk 'thang', and while Valentine was obviously influenced by The Incredible String Band, Comus and the like, what he ended up coming up with was startlingly fresh, and still sounds fresh today - 6 years on! What I really find incredible about this album is how the folkier elements are fused with way-out electronic experimentations and utter weirdness, we're left with an album of hiccups and sketches that sounds totally out on its own. Fans of Six Organs of Admittance, The North Sea, Joanna Newsom, White Magic... well you know what I'm trying to say - if you're into the scene, you simply have to hear 'Folkscene'. Highly recommended.
