wold - Freermasonry
Another crucial side on Stephen O’Malley’s Ideologic Organ, prised from some putrid cave deep under the underground. This time it’s a double-vinyl edition of Wold’s Freermasonry, the first time on wax for a work originally issued by Profound Lore Records on CD in 2011. The Saskatchewan troupe, led by one Fortress Crookedjaw, take no prisoners and sure as hell don’t meet you in the middle - rather they offload a barrage of putrid, zero-fidelity, utterly addictive black metal-flavoured noise, anchored by vocals that have to count among the most flesh-creeping and downright unpleasant we’ve heard on record this year. But these hell-hound yowls are in fact articulating, Wold maintain, “a series of poems and discourses” on such subjects as Mother allusions in Goethe’s Faust, the presence of dark goddess figures in the writings of Plutarch, and Masonic symbolism. Though completely blown-out and obliterated to f**k, the hermetic noise-world Wold conjure is curiously disciplined, curiously sensuous, and certainly very, very cathartic. All-out demon invocations like ‘Free Goat of Leviticus’ are contrasted with more rhythmic, atmospheric pieces like the superlative ‘Working Tools For Praxis’. Whether you enjoy the thing as a whole is probably going to depend on how receptive you are to vocals that sound like field recordings from an animal torture chamber taken and fed through a maxed-out, smashed-up £5 FX pedal; if you can vibe with that, or you’re at least undaunted by the prospect, then an embarrassment of outsider riches await you in the grooves of this magnificent record.
