Samy Ben Redjeb's wonderful Analog Africa series traces the Black Atlantic groove story to Colombia's vibrant port city, Barranquilla in the 1970s. Over 32 songs 'Diablos Del Ritmo' anthologises the virile melting pot of Afrobeat, Palenque, Tropical Funk, Terapia and psychedila rhythms on the first disc, and the tropical dance styles of Puya, Porro, Gaita, Cumbiamba, Mapalé, Chandéon on the 2nd, all exposing a steamy, grinding nights worth of pure groove heat irresistible to anyone with a set of hips and ears. Between the push-pull insistence of Ramiro Beltrán's achingly sexy 'Agoniza El Magdalena', the hypnotic polyrhythmic shuffle of Los Alegres Diablos' 'La Motilona' to the remarkably psychedelic recording of Juan Piña Y su Muchachos' 'La Nena' and Myrian Makenwa's driving funk rutter 'Amampondo', there's more hooks and drums than you can shake two tails to, making for guaranteed party starter or equally a damn fine education in Colombia's more salubrious export.
