The explosions of early '90s rave music have a lot to answer for. Now, long after the moment, and as with punk/post-punk and psychedelia before it, musics made in light of these brief windows of opportunity are now asking the vital questions, probing at genre intersections on the cusp of future electronic sound. This selection takes in 14 impressionistic examples of modified, abstracted and intensified electronic music directly/indirectly prompted by and reflective of the possibilities catalysed in this era; from the polarised pop extremes of Physical Therapy and Vindicatrix to the acid trance inversions of Lorenzo Senni, Ricardo Donoso and Florian Hecker, thru the continuum-collapsing jungle extractions of Lee Gamble and Richard Youngs, to the sound designer possibilities of Mark Fell, Russell Haswell and Oneohtrix Point Never. Of course, much of it sounds very little like the original music, but squint hard enough and you can hear the genetic traits and structures of ambient techno, Italian trance and UK jungle being selectively processed, augmented and hybridised with musique concrète, computer music and avant-garde techniques to create fascinating new adaptions. Maybe imagine a music inspired by these sounds, twenty years from now, and go make it!
