nathan fake - Paean (Original + Remixes)
Single release for Steam Days opener and stand-out 'Paean', backed with smart remixes from Lone and Lukid. The original is vintage Fake: lambent synths and chimes fleshing out a contrapuntal melody somewhere between the dancefloor heartbreak of Four Tet and the pastoral sci-fi twee of Belbury Poly, plus intricate drum programming, a real sense of forward momentum; also included here is a 'coda' of the same track, a short ambient spin on the theme. The remixes are excellent: Lone teases out the psychedelic potential of the track, accentuating the plaintive synth lines and introducing sighing choral pads into his spacious sound design; the feel is very much of 90s ambient techno and IDM a la The Black Dog, Balil, Reload et al. Lukid darks it out on his claustrophobic but ultimately redemptive version, pinning repeated bell-tones together with scuffed, twitching, Autechre-ish breakbeats; it is to the source material what South London is to rural Norfolk.
