fennesz - Hotel Paral.lel
'Hotel Paral.lel' was Fennesz's debut full length album originally issued way back in 1997. 'Hotel Paral.lel' features little of the huge, reverb-drenched ambience of 'Venice' or 'Endless Summer', but sees the producer on a far more electronic tip, recalling the work of Oval or Farmers Manual. Through fractured white noise and high frequency explorations we end up with something that at times even sounds close to the kind of music explored by the Sahko or even Chain Reaction imprints, and on one or two of the tracks we even get treated to a submerged 4/4 structure. Yep it's true, on 'Blok M' we are treated to a minimal techno framework forced through a grinding noisy filter to create some truly original and utterly spellbinding sounds, while on 'Fa' Fennesz ends up with a murky post-techno masterpiece which owes more to Gas than you would expect. Hearing this great album now, almost exactly ten years later (respectfully remastered now for extra listening pleasure) almost reframes it for another generation of listener. We've gone through the techno phase, the minimal/glitch movement, the digital academia, digital noise, analogue noise, electronica - and this record still sounds like it has the potential to shake things up. Few sound artists come close to Fennesz' ability to combine symphonic harmonies with rasping sound design, and even this decade-old document still sounds like little else that comes to mind. This new edition comes with an extra seven minute track '5' which was originally released on 7" in 1995, and a special video to 'Aus' created by Mego designer Tina Frank - but it's not like you need any further encouragement to pick up this electronic music milestone. An essential part of any self-respecting music fan's collection - buy without delay!
