ras g - El-Aylien Part II: C.razy A.lien
More spannered electronic weirdness from Ras G, this time dropping on the Matthewdavid-curated Leaving Records. It makes sense ‘El-Aylien Part II’ is placed next to Julia Holter’s insanely good ‘Tragedy’ somehow, while on the surface the two records might be very different, there’s clearly a similar sense of exhilaration and excitement in experimentation from the artists. Ras G’s infatuation with Sun Ra is well documented, and it’s never been more present here as he fries up the dissolving ghosts of Sun Ra’s legendary Moog sets, imbuing them with the energy and relentless rap-cured weirdness of Madlib or ‘Donuts’-era Dilla. Incoherent, loose loops are strung together and knocked back by tape hiss, bizarre Radiophonic zaps and chains of psychedelic echo, and take it from us that’s really as good as it sounds. It would be almost offensive to label ‘El-Aylien Part II’ a hip hop record at all – this is future facing experimental music and in raking up the last forty years of Black American music Ras G has ended up on something truly revelatory. Highly recommended!
