crackatoa - Strange Encounters
No Hats No Hoods serve up another cold and deadly Grime debut, after catalysing the catalogues of Rude Kid and Royal T. The young, Nottingham-based producer known as Crackatoa cites formative influence from early Prodigy, Scientist, Tubby, D&B, G-Funk and computer game music, which is all easy to hear across 'Strange Encounters'. The titles tracks an iced-out take on purple funk, somewhere between Joker and DBridge, while 'Two Tone' splashes out hypercoloured hooks, soaring electronics and jawside D&B drops like a mad answer to 'Pass Out'. Meanwhile 'Bronze' proves he's got love for the ladies with a lushly synthetic slow jam vibe and 'Clock Tower' plays coolly rooted yet instinctively futurist take on classic dub.
