genesis p-orridge & stan bingo - What's History
Impeccable NY/LA imprint Dais continue their excavation of Genesis P-Orridge's archive with a release they describe as an "industrial classic ahead of its time". Originally released on Austrian tape label Nekrophile in '83, 'What's History' was actually recorded in '81, during the very months of Throbbing Gristle's first dissolution. Born out of improvisation in Gen's Hackney bedroom, and featuring Stan Bingo (aka director and TG documentarian Dan Landin), it's an interesting and absorbing if ultimately rather crude offering, recalling some of TG's tape collages and especially P-Orridge's early COUM transmissions (recently reissued by Dais) - all swarming serial killer drones, disarmingly pretty keyboard melodies and jagged, disorienting cut-ups (there are a couple of moments when you feel you could be listening to a Ghost Box release, funnily enough). The original cassette is a much sought-after collectors item, so save yourself half a grand and plump for this much-needed digital edition.
