massacooramaan - Dead Long Time
Dave Quam comes correct with his debut proper for Kingdom's Fade To Mind label - an insightful, fresh-eared take on Footwork, Eski Grime and Dancehall fused with outernational soundsystem elements. As a blogger/journalist/DJ, Quam's coverage and knowledge of the Chicago scene has been invaluable in the virulent spread of Footwork. He's still a relatively new producer so there's no flash gimmicks on 'Dead Long Time', but there's a haul of new ideas, or rather established ideas, colliding in a vortex of metastable dancefloor structures. At the top 'Dead Long Time' twists the templates of Juke and Soca, while he goes toe-to-toe with DJ Rashad on a hybrid of Eski clicks and percolating drums called 'Aww Shit!' and 'Wijd' works a trippier tip; unidentified chants and hollowed tribal drum structures stomp a futuristic rain dance. At the other end, 'Bludgeon Riddim' reloads a clip of Wiley-style bleeps, clacks and wheezin' accordion in minimal, collapsible style, and 'Jumbie Yelp' locks into a rabbit hole of reduced Techno and Juke, for 'Dancehall Princess' to turn the bashment upside, slow-to-fast styles. Recommended to fans of Rashad, Lil Jabba, Dro Carey…
