nguzunguzu - Warm Pulse
Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda land on Hippos In Tanks having already impressed with their contributions to Kingdom's Fade To Mind label. Their recently released and thoroughly dope 'The Perfect Lullaby' mixtape documented their parallel obsessions with slick contemporary R&B/hip-hop and the rougher-hewn, underground sounds of footwork and house, a dichotomy explored even more thrillingly across this EP's four tracks. 'Warm Pulse' is just magnificent, all scything claps, detuned Eski synths, neighbourhood-bouncing subs and weird vocal incantations - the structure is simple and to-the-point, but there's a disorienting, psychedelic vibe there that just takes our breath away. 'Delirium' works with almost exactly the same sound-palette, but here the stuttering drums bear a more obvious debt to juke, and the synths are allowed fuller rein, pinging out strange melodies that sound like an Art Of Noise record played at the wrong speed; the terrific 'Smoke Alarm' sounds like grime viewed through the filter of James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual. 'Drop Cage' teams the Amen-compression of jungle (without the actual release) with what sounds like Mark Snow's X-Files Theme, while 'No Longer' is a more stripped track for the club. An EP of unusual and unlikely contrasts, executed with real style.
