panther modern (vessel) - Panther Modern EP
Panther Modern is the stealthier House handle for hotly-tipped Bristolian, Seb Gainsborough aka Vessel. His name is reference lifted from William Gibson's 'Neuromancer' classic and that's the setting we'd imagine these tracks to be played: in some red-lit Tokyo backstreet bar accessed by black steel doors and solely serving illicit pharmaceuticals. A-side 'Howl' opens with a minute of re-calibrating compressions before organising itself into a sleazy, swinging disco strut with narco- confident flair like some ruder adjunct to the more obvious (cheesy) House and Disco conventions emanating from his home city right now. Flipside 'Pentimento' locks on to a Motor City House groove coming from a similar outsider angle to, say, Morgan Geist or Recloose, balancing fruity synth funk with a bassier UK-styled vibe.
