darling farah - Body
Detroit-born Darling Farah is something of an underground hero in his home of the United Arab Emirates - and rightly so. After all, the playing of live music is prohibited in the UAE, so underground really means underground. Don't get us wrong; outlaw spirit alone isn't enough to make an artist interesting - but Farah has talent to match, and really knows his way around deep, stripped-down steppers' techno and compatible styles. Across this, his supremely accomplished debut album, the producer provokes comparisons with the likes of Shed, STL, Kowton and other top-tier purveyors of scuffed, dub-infused 4/4 science. There's a big debt to the arctic atmospherics of Deepchord, Porter Ricks and the Chain Reaction axis, particularly on the marvellous 'Fortune', while 'Aaangel' and 'All Eyes' make us think of Convextion at his most deliciously mournful. The aptly named 'Bruised' doffs its cap to UK bass music, but resists the obvious 2012 cliches, instead favouring an icily minimal, rude boy sound design that would give early Mystikz/Loefah the creeps, and the darkest darkside bass vamps we've heard this side of late 90s d'n'b. Strong recommendation - a must-check for techno heads.
