bear bones, lay low - El Telonero
Ernesto Gonzalez’s latest under the peculiar Bear Bones, Lay Low moniker finds him visiting the kinds of dusty, Radiophonic sounds we’ve recently heard from Ekoplekz and Pye Corner Audio, but as you’d expect with someone who is usually found jamming with Sylvester Anfang II, it’s just a little bit weirder. In fact ‘El Telonero’ sort of sounds like a blend of Delia Derbyshire and Fonal’s much loved Paavoharju – this is rough around the edges and undoubtedly fun music, but with a mysterious cave-dwelling twist that it’s near impossible to put your finger on. Gonzalez is an avid record collector and this knowledge sets him apart from his peers, giving him the rich background he needs to create music which is influenced, but not totally informed by times past. Beautiful and narrative driven, ‘El Telonero’ is a good representation of where electronic music is in 2012, as seen from 1968. Recommended.
