various / tectonic - Tectonic Plates Volume 3
Pinch's Tectonic Plates comps are always quality documents not just of where his label's at, but also the current state, and possible future directions, of dubstep and its tributaries. Vol.3 is another corker, zoning in on class new productions from the Tectonic roster and extended label fam. Kryptic Minds, who've done as much as anyone to preserve the founding essence of dubstep come correct again with their cinematic opener, 'The Talisman', all filtered Middle Eastern melodies, frozen atmospherics, thwacking snares and serious sub ruffage. Pinch delivers one his finest ever productions in 'Blow Out The Candle', its classic halfstep swagger enlivened by darkling electro stabs and a surprisingly slinky, snaking groove, reminding us of Loefah's peerless early productions. Tunnidge's dense, uptempo percussion workout 'Universal' feels genuinely next-level while sticking to sound base (bass?) principles, and Roska's '480 BC' unmoors itself from the structures of UK Funky in pursuit of a more abstract future-tribalism, before Monky compresses arcing strings, galloping arpeggios and ardkore ghost-breaks into something highly focussed and effective. Ginz's 'Chrome' explores an interesting avenue somewhere between his work with Joker and with Emptyset, making for the most abstract, hard-ass take on the purple wow sound we've yet heard, and Kevin Phee's garage-inflected house 'Outs' is really fresh. Illum Sphere, Clue Kid, Goth Trad, Addison Groove, OM Unit and 2562 - with the 10-minute epic 'Rogue State' - round out a heavy, resonant package for the steppers.
