rarebit - Daizo
An album of trippy, jazz-tinged electronica from Justin Hopkins aka RareBit, building on the considerable promise of last year's Destroyer EP. It all kicks off rather guardedly with the woozy keyboard arpeggios of 'No New Wave', but 'Running Tangles' warms things right up, as Hopkins constructs an intricate ecosystem of vocal glossolalia, pinched bass notes, shivering synths and guitar that alternately whines and wahs. The humid, trippy 'Mt. Weather' and 'Phantom Wall' have more than a whiff of Balam Acab about them, the latter's reverbed vocals coming even closer to the psychedelic plainsong of Panda Bear. The warring xylophones and blunted beats of 'Emergence' combine to bring about something that's equal parts Zomby and Madlib, before the last section of the album wanders into more explicitly jazz territory: on 'Convergence' Hopkins employs wailing sax, piano and vibes with great conviction and restraint, while 'I'll Be Hard On You' is the kind of electronic soul excursion that the JCR/Compost lot would lose their marbles over. Recommended for fans of Flying Lotus, Austin Peralta, Four Tet, Jazzanova and the like.
