loops of your heart - And Never Ending Nights
Axel Willner (The Field) rejoins Koln's Magazine set with his first album as Loops Of The Heart. He's already worked with the collective on their first release 'Render', and since moving from Sweden to Berlin he's taken the time to create 'And Never Ending Nights'. Arguably, it's his most intriguing and far-reaching opus, steering away from saffron-scented Trance-Techno and into more adventurous Kosmiche zones guided from a flight desk of vintage equipment - Roland SH-5, Roland JX-3P, Sequential Circuits Pro-One, Arp Odyssey, Yamaha CS-01, Oberkorn 3 Sequencr, Elektron Machinedrum and Electric Barytone Guitar. Of course, it's all still got that timeless sense of glory you'd expect from Axel Willner, but he cleverly manages to achieve this with different means. The warm, glowing synth flesh of 'Little You, You Should Develop' feels more mature, restrained than his other work, and is all the better for it, while the ten minute 'Broken Bow' is a more radical departure crafted from plangent, desert-scanning guitars and night-hunting synths you'd associate with something by Expo 70 or Steve Moore. Again, 'Neukolln' is possessed by a darker spirit, juxtaposing atmospheric field recordings against wondrous synth blooms, for 'End' to resolve the tension with a fluttering pastoral vignette. The closest we get to the dancefloor is via the muscular arpeggios and mind-burrowing filter trickery of 'Lost In The Mirror', but even then, you're not going to break a sweat, while 'At The Boards' caps the set with an evocatively warm and woozy miniature up there with anything you've heard from ADR, NO UFO's, Thanet or Belbury Poly. Recommended.
