kyoka - iSH
The fifth in Raster Noton's dancefloor-focussed Unun series is from Berlin/Tokyo-based musician/composer Kyoka - with production by Frank Bretschneider. She continues the Japanese bias of the series (Aoki Takamasa and Kouhei Matsuaga's NHK account for the other 2 of 5 releases) with a slant towards experimental yet fully danceable "pop-beat" deconstructions, five tracks poised between sturdy functionalism and more frayed, diffuse electronics. The Industrial-strength welt of opener 'HADue' is an exemplary case, steam-pressed kicks and ricocheting reverbs just about hold together spliced robo-vox and unruly, scrawling surface details. A classy Atom™ remix doubles the length and adds some tart acidic flavour, but back on 'YESACLOUDui' matters are more discombobulated, splitting shards of roguish Techno funk and hyperactive swing-beat, while '23 iSH' rolls with a rugged ragga junglist swagger, reduced to a nano-fine filigree, and 'ROMOOne' serves slouchy, abstract Hip Hop bump within a morphing, head-pressured sound sphere. Mutant, masterful electronics, tipped by Ryuichi Sakamoto, no less!
