peter broderick - http:// itstartshear.com
Peter Broderick’s third solo album proper, and his second for Bella Union, is as sumptuously written, arranged and performed as we’ve come to expect. Why the URL web title? According to Broderick, istartshear was designed simply to be a place where all listeners can easily access all the lyrics and notes and visuals which are meant to go along with the songs. And as a title, itstartshear.com serves the music well by automatically becoming a link any time the album is written about.” Based on that, if ever get’s tired of making music, there’s doubtless plenty of marketing/advertising departments who’d we’re sure would love to hire him. Back to the music though, which really is delightful: probably his warmest, most immediate set to date, this time with a pronounced Nashville influence – several songs recall the elegantly orchestrated country of 70s mavericks like Mickey Newbury and David Wiffen. The title track is an unexpected lurch into spoken-worded, synth-enhanced modernity, though it’s perhaps a bit too cute and knowing to sit well with the more earnest, and far more satisfying, material elsewhere on the LP. Broderick is a major talent, of that there’s no doubt – who else could pull off folk-meets-disco with the aplomb that he does on ‘With The Notes In My Tears’ – and this album could be the one that turns him into a household name.
