neon cloud - Knit
Japan's Flaü label makes an unexpected but very welcome right turn into spectral pop with the debut release by Tokyo's Neon Cloud. Making obvious but respectful nods to Tri Angle's Holy Other, o0o00 and Balam Acab, or the likes of Grimes, 'Knit' convects glossolalic coos and pitched vox around slow, tense electro/R&B rhythms with an meticulous attention to detail and sensitively spacious production. Keeping things mystically reserved, each track is identified by a symbol, the triangular one defined by sweeping soft-synth dynamics and supple, slow moving electro bass smudged with that gorgeous lead vocal. The square track is more widescreen, sci-fi -eyed, the smooth surfaces textured with a rougher grain, while there's almost a dubstep lurch to the circular one, kinda like the King Midas Sound LP gone further east and cyber-melancholy. Luxembourg's Sun Glitters weighs in with a more layered swirling revision of the triangle track.
