zhou - I Remain / Noboru
Punch Drunk dip back into the ever-fertile Bristol scene with the debut 12" from Zhou. Alongside the likes of El Kid, Vessel, and Kahn, Zhou completes the city's Young Echo collective, a group of like-minded, adventurous bass-tronauts pushing the parameters of Dubstep thanks to an awareness of sounds and styles beyond the genre's borders. A-side 'I Remain' is a minimalist, disciplined meditation on forward steppers' dub, troddin' a strong line between Mala-style offset gallop and the iced reserve of Peverelist. Flipside their widely scoped tastes come into play with 'Noboru', concentrated on suffocating bass and sepulchral reverbs with tense drones sharing more in common with the likes of Mika Vainio or their home city's Paul Jebanasam and Emptyset.
