andrew pekler - Sentimental Favourites
It’s been ages since we last heard from Andrew Pekler, and who’d have thought his return would be an album made in tribute to the crap easy listening records you find in Oxfam. You know the ones, usually about some kind of love or other, often by James Last or possibly even just titled ‘Romantic Moods’. Somehow though, by using this seemingly cheesy source material Pekler turns out a record that totally sidesteps the current trend for Radiophonic nostalgia or synthesizer fetishism. Sure there’s plenty of synth on show, but it’s covered with the dust and grit of an old vinyl record, and embellished with the odd, twisted 1960s and 70s visions of coffee table romance. This was music made for a purpose, to suit housewives and non-music fans as background music as they went about their days – and Pekler has somehow successfully reframed the sounds into odd, and oddly beautiful vignettes that are both nostalgic and sort of touching. There’s a clear sense of warmth in Pekler’s treatments, and how he avoids deriding the source material or falling into the traps made by Lemon Jelly in the late 90s is beyond me. ‘Sentimental’ is exactly that, a loveletter to the past and one which remains blissfully engaging from beginning to end. Recommended.
