sympathy nervous - Automaticism
Another classy new edition from Minimal Wave, this time focussed on the proto-techno talents of Japanese artist Yosihumi Niinuma, who appeared on the amazing Hidden Tapes comp earlier this year. Inspired by krautrock and classical, Niinuma began recording for the now uber-collectible Vanity label in ’79, producing some of the most extraordinary minimal synth music ever to come out of the Far East. From the moment you lock your lugs on widescreen opener ‘Accident’ – shades of Bernard Sjazner, E.M.A.K. and early Carl Craig - you know this is going to be special. Niinuma went on to make techno in the 1990s, and listening to this stuff, it’s easy to see what a natural evolution it must have been: tracks like ‘Extended Time’ and ‘His Forte’ have a tracky intensity that’s just amazing for the era they were created in (’78-’81); if you dig Chris Carter’s The Space Between and the early recordings of Monoton then you need to check this. Best of all, and to MW’s infinite credit, this is a benefit release – meaning all profits go to the artist. Get involved…
