danny paul grody - In Search of Light
The follow-up to ex-Tarentel man Danny Paul Grody’s well-received ‘Fountain’ LP, ‘In Search of Light’ finds Grody adding layers of delicate analogue synthesizer to his gorgeous post-Takoma fingerpicking. Somehow the result is like a lost private-press outsider recording, but one that is so brittle and harrowingly beautiful it’s hard to understand why nobody came across it sooner. Grody’s music has often dwelled on the elegiac, but ‘In Search of Light’ (as the title might suggest) is his most outwardly gorgeous to date, with souring guitar sections and equally warming drones. The album is a breath of fresh air from the current scene’s obsession with ‘dark’ and ‘doom’, and thankfully the album is mercifully twee of anything twee or cloying. Rather we get expert guitar playing (think Fahey or Kotkke) punctuated by the lightest of treatments, and a compositional skill (no doubt honed in his orchestral post-rock band The Drift) that belies his peers. ‘In Search of Light’ is an album for losing yourself in, and if you have access to a remote cabin in the mountains – now might be the time to grab that key and get moving. Recommended.
