some truths (bass clef) - Damnation poisoned with rainbows
This is something special – a collection of zipping modular electronica from Ralph Cumbers aka Bass Clef. I say electronica because there’s little of the directionless noisy modular wankery of the recent US scene in ‘Damnation Poisoned With Rainbows’, rather Cumbers takes it right back to the days of early Skam and Warp with these carefully sculpted analogue constructions. It’s hardly surprising that the album originally surfaced on cassette tape – this is electronica as enjoyed in 1990, but reproduced with a defiant air of unpredictable, circuit-bent randomness. Beats are typically bass heavy and roll underneath a swooping fog of saw waves and clipped white noise. The best comparison might be Autechre’s ‘Cichlisuite’ or Bola’s underrated ‘Soup’, but ‘Damnation Poisoned With Rainbows’ has a distinct sound all of its own that should appeal to anyone who’s dropped dollars on Keith Fullerton Whitman’s recent prolific output. Recommended.
