viodre - Interpol Alchemi
Despite being active for over ten years, ‘Interpol Alchemi’ is Long Island duo Viodre’s first widely available release. Bryan Gilroy and Jared Turinsky have been working away under the radar releasing a slew of tapes and CDrs over the last decade, and ‘Interpol Alchemi’ sounds like it. There is the tempered sound of veterans at work; and while the album might be dropped into the noise section of any record collection, it’s so much more than that term could possibly describe. The twisted static and screaming distortion that you might expect to find leafing through Merzbow’s hundred plus back catalogue has been dialed back to near zero here, in its place is murky radio hum, dank cavernous field recordings and chopped, calloused samples closer to Xenakis or Luc Ferrari than you might expect from the Hospital canon. ‘Interpol Alchemi’ plays like a troubling dialogue, and each line is expertly fleshed out in a barrage of transcendent, cracked sound. Anyone who found solace in Mike Shiflet’s recent ‘Sufferers’ LP or in Dominick Fernow’s more pensive work should check this one without delay. Highly recommended.
