gold panda - DJ-Kicks
It might be just my imagination but from where I’m sitting it seems like DJs are digging deeper these days. Not just picking out more obscure gems for our listening pleasure, but really mixing things up – and Gold Panda’s entry in the long-running DJ Kicks series is a great example of this. Blending contemporary bass music with old classics is one thing, but once you throw in some brooding experimental electronics and rushing textural ambience in you start to get something really interesting. It shouldn’t be too surprising to those who have heard Gold Panda’s productions, but still seeing Drexciya next to Giuseppe Ielasi on a track list makes us smile. It works too – there’s nothing jump cut about Panda’s mixing, as he blends heavy-hitting Muslimgauze instrumental ‘Uzi Mahmood’ with Drexciya classic ‘Andreaen Sand Dunes’ and SND’s gorgeous, effervescent ‘Palo Alto’ with Pawel’s ‘Coke’. This collection of shufflers isn’t a history lesson, nor is it a collection of sneaky hot-off-the-press whitelabels, I get the sense that Gold Panda’s got very little to prove here. Simply he’s put together a bunch of tracks that make sense, tracks that sound good – some you’ll likely have heard before and a good handful of surprises. Anyone with a slight interest in the dreamy moods of Ezekiel Honig, the nu-gaze techno of Border Community, the twisted neon bass music of Night Slugs or even Fennesz’s noisy shimmer should look closer. By the time the album comes to a humming climax on Giuseppe Ielasi’s ‘2’ you’ll know you're in good hands.
