dntel - Life Is Full of Possibilities (Deluxe Edition)
Lovely to see this absolute belter of an album re-issued and available once more, as it just happens to be an old office favourite from back in the day. ‘Life is Full of Possibilities’ was one of the most successful meldings of indie and electronic music we’d ever heard back then, and to be quite honest it still sounds fresh to this day. Producer Jimmy Tamborello and vocalist Ben Gibbard (of Deathcab for Cutie fame) went on to form the Postal Service after this record, but here’s where it all began – and anyone who’s heard ‘This Is The Dream of Evan and Chan’ will be able to tell you it was never really bettered. The thing that most separated Tamborello’s compositions from those of his peers was that he imbued his productions with an inherent melancholy, a human touch that kept listeners going back for more. Listening again now for the first time in a while it’s still as affecting as it was back in the early noughties and it’s fantastic to see Sub Pop giving the album the deluxe treatment it deserves. Fans will likely be pleased to hear that the remixes and b-sides that appeared at the time are now bundled in the package, and just because Sub Pop loves us they’ve included some fantastically odd extras. My pick of the bunch is a spannered remix from Regis and Silent Servant that takes album highlight ‘Anyone, Anywhere’ and reframes it as sub-aquatic Birmingham techno. I could go on, but there’s hardly any point – just go and buy it OK?
