various / ghostly international - SMM Vol. 2
Those of you out there with your ears to the ground will have no doubt already recognized that like Fennesz, Akira Rabelais and Keith Fullerton Whitman, Christopher Willets has got a very special minimalist touch. This amazing second edition in Ghostly's 'SMM' Series opens with 'Breathe (In 7 Sections)' - a christopher willets epic that clocks in at no less than 16 minutes, lovingly cut and mastered by Loop-O at D&M. Sweet upper register guitar plucking samples are chopped and spliced (or as Christopher would insist - folded not glitched) behind some of the deepest and sweetest drones of the year all sculptured into breathtaking songs without words. At the mid section the bass throbs fall away for a sublime Fripp/Eno recreation moment before the track continues in a more abstract but no less breathtaking manner until the music then falls into more sweetly melodic minimal soul with glacial female vocals. Amazing music to blow you away. On the flipside is a new track by L'usine called 'Payne's Gray' which offers surges of real life static and movement and harmonics like the humming of a fridge motor. Slowly but surely spliced cello enters the sound field and the background noises increase the bass proportions. As the sublime repetition continues you might be reminded of some of the finer works of Steve Reich ala 'Different Trains' - intriguing and unbeleivably well sculpted new territory for Lusine. Cepia (new tracks up soon on Neo Ouija's latest Cottage Industries CD and remixing Mr Projectile on Semisexual #2) rounds off this excellent EP with two tracks, 'sqr exp' & 'Ramp', the former a cross level meeting of graceful but edgy rising chord progressions against background noises like a small army of excited pinball machines, the latter a gorgeous, spatial and graceful new school pure ambience piece like they used to make before it all went hippy. 'SMM Vol 2' is one of the best ambient based slices of vinyl released for an absolute age. You have no excuses for letting this one slip by. Essential.
