tujiko noriko - Shojo Toshi+
'Shojo Toshi' was originally released back in 2001 on the gloriously irreverent Mego label, and came as quite a surprise to followers of the label, eschewing the usual noise and sonic corruption which Mego made their name pursuing. Japanese chanteuse Tujiko Noriko pieced together an album of delicate, decomposed J-Pop and downbeat electronics. After the collapse of Mego not so long ago, many of us assumed old gems like this would have been lost forever in the ashes, but Peter Rehberg (Pita) has now set up Editions Mego, which will continue the Mego legacy and keep the hordes of rabid experimentalists happy once more. Editions Mego have repackaged this classic album with new artwork and also interestingly with the rare and very early 'I Forgot the Title' 12", which I assumed was long gone. It's great to hear these old tracks again, and none of them seem to have dated - the thing with Noriko's music is that you can imagine it was created out of time, in a bubble so to speak, it simply doesn't sound like anything else. If you're a fan of her later work and you don't own this album then you should really grab this to find out where it all started, and if you haven't heard her yet, it's a perfect access point to her unique talent. Highly recommended.
