radian - Tg11
Radian are a band I'll never tire of; their totally unique collision of tighter-than-tight drumming and fractured laptop noise sets them in a world of their own, and while they might be comparable to Supersilent or Humcrush for instance, there's just nothing like a Radian record. 'Tg11' was their first full-length album and emerged back in 2000 on the Mego label which was the perfect home for their strange blend of influences. The more computer-manipulated elements almost sounded like they could have been belched from the hard drive of Fennesz, Pita or Hecker, but when pitted against Martin Brandlmayr insanely precise percussive work it becomes something absolutely different. Squeals, hums and glitches are placed knowingly, tones appear and disappear with the greatest of ease, and what could so easily be 'free' drumming is anything but - this might often be described a noise record, but what other noise album is sculpted with so much precision and timing? The band would go on to record a slew of records for the Thrill Jockey label and splinter into such acts as Trapist and Autistic Daughters, but for me these early emissions caught the band at their most blistering. If you like intense experimental music you just can't go wrong with 'Tg11'. Huge recommendation.
