james ferraro - Condo Pets EP
Hippos In Tanks have the honour of presenting a startling, updated sound from the inimitable "man with the moon-lit pompadour", James Ferraro - a prelude to 'Far Side Virtual' due out later this year. For anyone familiar with Ferraro's previously preferred mode of ferric obfuscation, hearing the 'Condo Pets' EP is like when your parents switched up from tape to CD way back when, and you were just shocked at the neon green display on the console and couldn't stop playing the cack sample CD of MIDIfied classic TV themes that came with it (or is that just us?). Only, in this case Ferraro's cack is far, far cannier, warping that sense of nostalgia with a Hollywood sleight-of-hand Criss Angle would be proud of, skipping the digital time scale between Haroumi Hosono-lite electro-jazz sophistication to pseudo megacorp TV idents with the joy of someone realizing their rebirth in Second Life. It's got the strangest grasp of nostalgia for contemporary POP ART, summed up in titles like 'Find Out Whats On Carrie Bradshaw's iPod' and its naughty MIDI string cues, or the (multi)media-numbed psychedelia of 'Smoothies, Foodies, Flat Screens and Virtuality', implanting memory snagging hooks like the purified gamer melodies on 'The Secret World Of Condo Pets' and the droopy-lidded jolliness of 'Eco-Tot'. In this bold merger with HIT, Ferraro envisages "The results of this relationship will see a new era in Art History". We can only hope, for our children's sake. Recommended!
