lee noble - Horrorism
I don’t know a great deal about Lee Noble – from what I gather he’s from Los Angeles, which I guess narrows it down a little, but apart from that… well… nothing. ‘Horrorism’ is his latest full length and comes from the ever-reliable Bathetic camp, so my expectations were high, and thankfully weren’t dashed as this is a disarmingly beautiful piece of work. I want to say it sounds like a male counterpart to early Grouper – there are vocals there buried beneath a sea of reverberating effects, and while sometimes the entire soundfield is obscured, there is always a sense that Noble is writing pop songs somehow. These songs might have been slowed down to ten BPM, but they are songs nonetheless which makes ‘Horrorism’ stand out in a stagnant sea of meaningless drone music. The more I listen to the record, the more it sinks its emotional talons into me; just head over to ‘Indian Princess’ for a track so sad and gruesome you’ll be brought to wheezing tears, without really knowing why (who knows what the dude’s on about, really). Gorgeous, unassuming experimental pop music; those looking for an antidote to kosmische and drone should look no further! Recommended.
